Grammar in focus · expressing pain

There are two common ways to say something hurts. (1) « wehtun » with the dative person: « Mir tut der Kopf weh » (literally: to me the head does hurt). The pattern is « Mir / Dir tut der/die/das … weh »; for plural body parts use « tun »: « Mir tun die Füße weh. » (2) « Ich habe … schmerzen » — combine the body part with -schmerzen as one compound noun: Kopfschmerzen (headache), Halsschmerzen (sore throat), Bauchschmerzen (stomach ache), Zahnschmerzen (toothache). General state: « Ich bin krank », « Ich habe Fieber. »
