Grammar in focus · the modal sollen & the imperative

Use the modal verb « sollen » to give or ask for advice. Its subjunctive form « sollte » is softer and very common: ich sollte, du solltest, Sie sollten — « Sie sollten sich ausruhen. » The modal is conjugated in position 2 and the main verb stays as an infinitive at the END: « Du solltest mehr Wasser trinken. » The IMPERATIVE gives direct instructions. Formal (Sie): keep Sie after the verb — « Gehen Sie zur Apotheke! », « Trinken Sie Tee! » Informal (du): drop the -st ending — « Trink Tee! », « Bleib im Bett! »
