Grammar in focus · professions without an article

A key German rule: when you state your job after « sein » or « werden », you DROP the article: « Ich bin Lehrer », « Sie ist Ärztin », « Er wird Ingenieur. » (In English we say 'a teacher', but German omits the « ein ».) Professions usually have masculine and feminine forms; the feminine adds « -in »: der Lehrer → die Lehrerin, der Arzt → die Ärztin, der Student → die Studentin. You can also use « arbeiten als » (work as), and here too no article: « Ich arbeite als Lehrer. » To say where: « Ich arbeite bei … / an einer Schule / in einem Büro. »
