The Plusquamperfekt describes an action that happened before another past action. Form it with the Präteritum of haben/sein + past participle: Ich hatte verschlafen, bevor ich losrannte; Der Zug war schon abgefahren, als ich ankam. Sequence your story with adverbs that trigger verb-second word order: 'Zuerst hatte ich verschlafen', 'Dann stand ich…', 'Plötzlich merkte ich…', 'Schließlich habe ich…'.
