Grammar in focus · Konjunktiv II for politeness

The Konjunktiv II makes requests softer and more polite. The most common forms: hätte (haben), wäre (sein), würde (werden), könnte (können), müsste (müssen). For most other verbs, use 'würde + infinitive': 'Ich würde gern bestellen.' Compare directness: 'Bringen Sie mir Wasser' (blunt) vs 'Könnten Sie mir bitte Wasser bringen?' (polite). 'Ich hätte gern…' is the standard polite way to order.

Write a short polite email (4-5 sentences) to a hotel asking to change your reservation. Use at least three Konjunktiv II forms.

Gut! Soften your requests: « Wäre es möglich, das Zimmer zu wechseln? » and « Ich hätte gern ein ruhigeres Zimmer. » Avoid blunt imperatives in formal writing.
