Guten Tag, ich möchte mich über mein Zimmer beschweren. Die Klimaanlage funktioniert nicht. 🔊Hello, I'd like to complain about my room. The air conditioning isn't working.
Das tut mir sehr leid. Seit wann ist das Problem denn aufgetreten? 🔊I'm very sorry. Since when has the problem occurred?
Seit gestern Abend. Außerdem hatte ich ein Zimmer mit Meerblick gebucht, aber das hier hat keinen. 🔊Since yesterday evening. Also, I had booked a room with a sea view, but this one doesn't have one.
Ich verstehe Ihren Ärger. Wir könnten Ihnen ein anderes Zimmer anbieten. 🔊I understand your frustration. We could offer you another room.
Das wäre gut. Wenn das nicht möglich ist, würde ich eine teilweise Erstattung erwarten. 🔊That would be good. If that's not possible, I'd expect a partial refund.
Selbstverständlich. Wir finden auf jeden Fall eine Lösung für Sie. 🔊Of course. We'll definitely find a solution for you.
Grammar in focus · comparatives & 'seit'

Compare cultures and things with comparatives: 'In Deutschland isst man früher zu Abend als in Spanien'; 'Wien ist kleiner als Berlin, aber genauso schön.' The superlative: 'der beste Service'. Use 'seit' + dative with the present tense for something still ongoing: 'Seit gestern funktioniert die Heizung nicht' (it started yesterday and is still broken). For complaints, Konjunktiv II keeps you firm yet polite: 'Ich würde eine Erstattung erwarten.'

Write it yourself

Write a polite complaint email (5-6 sentences) about a hotel room that wasn't as described, and ask for a solution or refund.

Tip for this task
Gut! Be firm but courteous: « Ich würde mich über eine zügige Lösung freuen. » Use 'seit' for the ongoing issue: « Seit der Ankunft ist das Zimmer zu laut. »
