Concessive clauses with obwohl (or the more formal obgleich) send the conjugated verb to the end of the clause: « Obwohl es schwierig ist, lohnt es sich. » If the subordinate clause comes first, the main clause begins with its verb (Verb-Zweit after the comma): « Obwohl er müde war, arbeitete er weiter. » Use zwar … aber as a flexible pair to concede then rebut without subordination: « Das Projekt ist zwar teuer, aber es zahlt sich aus. »
Write a short argumentative paragraph (4–5 sentences) on whether smartphones belong in classrooms. State a thesis, concede one counter-point with obwohl or zwar…aber, then rebut it.
