Grammar in focus · Adversative Konnektoren

dennoch, trotzdem and nichtsdestotrotz are adverbs, not conjunctions, so they take position one and the verb follows in position two: « Es regnete; trotzdem gingen wir spazieren. » They signal a rebuttal after a concession. Pair them with a leading zwar to telegraph the structure: « Das Argument ist zwar plausibel, dennoch greift es zu kurz. » nichtsdestotrotz is the most formal and works well in written argumentation.

Respond to this objection in a short paragraph: « Soziale Medien machen einsam. » Concede part of it, then rebut using dennoch or nichtsdestotrotz.

Gut! Remember dennoch is an adverb, so the verb stays in position two: « Soziale Medien können isolieren; dennoch verbinden sie Menschen über Grenzen hinweg. » Keep the concession genuine, not a strawman.
