Both damit and um … zu express purpose. Use um … zu (+ Infinitiv at the end) only when the subject of both clauses is the same: « Ich lerne, um die Prüfung zu bestehen. » Use damit when the subjects differ: « Ich erkläre es, damit du es verstehst. » damit is a subordinating conjunction, so its verb goes to the end. um … zu has no separate subject and ends with zu + Infinitiv.
