Grammar in focus · sodass & deshalb (Folge)

sodass (or so … dass) introduces a result clause; it is subordinating, so the verb goes to the end: « Die Methode wurde lange getestet, sodass die Risiken bekannt sind. » deshalb, deswegen and daher are consequential adverbs in a main clause, with the verb in position two: « Die Risiken sind hoch, deshalb braucht man Studien. » Use sodass for a fluid result inside one sentence and deshalb to start a new statement of consequence.

Write it yourself

Write 4–5 sentences about a recent scientific or technological advance. Use sodass once and deshalb once to link cause and result.

Tip for this task
Gut! Keep sodass for results inside a clause (verb final) and deshalb to open a consequence (verb in position two): « Die Daten waren eindeutig, deshalb wurde die Studie veröffentlicht. » Weigh at least one risk against the benefit.
