Grammar in focus · Konjunktiv II der Vergangenheit

To talk about an unreal or regretted past, use the past Konjunktiv II: hätte or wäre + Partizip II. « Wenn ich es gewusst hätte, hätte ich anders gehandelt. » Choose wäre with verbs of motion and change of state (gehen, kommen, werden), and hätte otherwise. With modals, the structure is hätte + Infinitiv + Modal-Infinitiv at the end: « Das hätte anders laufen müssen. » You can drop wenn and start with the verb: « Hätten wir es geprüft, … ».

Write it yourself

Write 4–5 sentences about a technology decision (real or hypothetical) that should have gone differently. Use the past Konjunktiv II at least twice, including one regret.

Tip for this task
Gut! Pick hätte vs. wäre correctly: motion/change → wäre, otherwise hätte. Modal at the very end: « Wir hätten transparenter sein müssen. » Make at least one sentence a genuine wenn-clause: « Wenn wir gewarnt hätten, … ».
