To talk about an unreal or regretted past, use the past Konjunktiv II: hätte or wäre + Partizip II. « Wenn ich es gewusst hätte, hätte ich anders gehandelt. » Choose wäre with verbs of motion and change of state (gehen, kommen, werden), and hätte otherwise. With modals, the structure is hätte + Infinitiv + Modal-Infinitiv at the end: « Das hätte anders laufen müssen. » You can drop wenn and start with the verb: « Hätten wir es geprüft, … ».
Write 4–5 sentences about a technology decision (real or hypothetical) that should have gone differently. Use the past Konjunktiv II at least twice, including one regret.
