After essere, professions take NO article: sono insegnante, è medico, siamo studenti. But with fare you use the article: faccio l'ingegnere, fa il medico. Feminine forms often change: insegnante stays the same, but cuoco → cuoca, infermiere → infermiera, dottore → dottoressa. To ask: « Che lavoro fai? » or « Che cosa fai? »
