The imperfetto sets the scene: habits, descriptions, ongoing background (« passavo le estati in campagna », « la casa era grande »). The passato prossimo reports single, completed events that advance the story (« sono caduta », « mi sono rotta un braccio »). They often combine: « Mentre raccoglievo le ciliegie (background), sono caduta (event) ».
Write 4–5 sentences about a childhood memory, describing the background and then one thing that happened.
