Sequence events with prima, poi, all'improvviso, infine. The trapassato prossimo (imperfetto of avere/essere + past participle) marks an action completed before another past action: « Quando sono arrivato, il treno era già partito » (it had already left before I arrived). Use « di aver dimenticato » to compress this: « ho capito di aver dimenticato i documenti ».
