🔊This groundbreaking discovery could change how we treat many diseases.
Affascinante. 🔊Fascinating. But the repercussions for ethics must be assessed carefully.
🔊It's true that scientific research moves fast, but the rules always come later.
Ogni progresso è a doppio taglio: si guadagna in salute, si rischia in privacy. 🔊Every advance is double-edged: you gain in health, you risk in privacy.
🔊That's why it's wise to experiment cautiously and with great transparency.
Concordo: i progressi tecnologici vanno guidati, non semplicemente subiti. 🔊I agree: technological advances should be guided, not simply endured.
Grammar in focus · « andare » + participle (obligation passive)

« Andare » + past participle expresses a passive obligation/necessity, equivalent to « deve essere + participle »: « le regole vanno rispettate » = the rules must be respected; « i progressi vanno guidati » = the advances must be guided. The participle agrees with the subject. It only works in simple tenses. Compare « va valutato » (must be assessed) with « è valutato » (is assessed).

Write it yourself

Write 4–5 sentences on a scientific advance and its risks, using « andare » + participle once.

Tip for this task
Bene! « Andare » + participle quietly packs in « must be » — « i dati vanno protetti » is tighter than « i dati devono essere protetti ».
