Grammar in focus · the irreal conditional (periodo ipotetico)

Type 3 (impossible/past, irrealtà): « Se + congiuntivo trapassato, + condizionale passato »: « Se avessimo controllato, avremmo scoperto » (If we had checked, we'd have discovered). Type 2 (present unreal): « Se + congiuntivo imperfetto, + condizionale presente »: « Se sapessimo, ci fideremmo » (If we knew, we'd trust). Key forms: avessi/avessimo + participle; sarei/saremmo + participle; fossi stato.
