Grammar in focus · the past tense
Polish past-tense verbs change ending by gender. From 'być' (to be): a man says 'byłem', a woman says 'byłam'. The pattern -em (m.) / -am (f.) repeats: 'robiłem / robiłam' (I did), 'jadłem / jadłam' (I ate). For 'you' (informal): 'byłeś' (m.) / 'byłaś' (f.). The verb already shows who is speaking, so the pronoun 'ja' is usually dropped.
