Grammar in focus · gdyby + tryb przypuszczający (past conditional / unreal conditions)

Unreal conditions use gdyby in the if-clause + conditional in the main clause. Present/general unreal: « Gdybym miał czas, pomógłbym. » (If I had time, I'd help.) Past unreal (counterfactual): both verbs perfective + conditional: « Gdybyśmy zauważyli błąd, un_iknęlibyśmy szkody. » (If we had noticed the error, we would have avoided the damage.) Crucially, forms are GENDERED: masc. « zrobiłbym / zauważyłbym », fem. « zrobiłabym / zauważyłabym »; pl. « zrobilibyśmy » (masc.-personal) vs. « zrobiłybyśmy » (other). The by attaches to gdy (gdyby) and to the main verb.

Dobrze! Lock the gender of every conditional/past form to one consistent speaker. Model (fem.): « Gdybym przewidziała ten błąd, zatrzymałabym wdrożenie. » Model (masc.): « Gdybym przewidział ten błąd, zatrzymałbym wdrożenie. » For mixed/male groups use -libyśmy, otherwise -łybyśmy.
