To say how long you have been doing something that is still going on, Spanish uses the PRESENT tense + desde hace + a period: 'Estudio español desde hace dos años' (I've been studying Spanish for two years). Note: English uses the present perfect here, but Spanish uses the present. You can also ask '¿Cuánto tiempo hace que estudias español?' The verb empezar is stem-changing (e → ie): empiezo, empiezas, empieza, empezamos, empezáis, empiezan. Frequency adverbs help: siempre, a menudo, a veces, nunca.
