¿Qué pasó? Cuéntamelo todo. 🔊What happened? Tell me everything.
Primero, subí al vagón y me senté; luego empecé a leer tranquilamente. 🔊First, I got on the carriage and sat down; then I started reading calmly.
Vale, ¿y entonces? 🔊OK, and then?
De repente, un señor se puso a cantar ópera, y al final todo el vagón le aplaudió. 🔊Suddenly, a man started singing opera, and in the end the whole carriage applauded him.
¡Qué fuerte! Eso solo te pasa a ti. 🔊How wild! That only happens to you.
Grammar in focus · sequencing connectors

Connectors organise a narrative in time. Use them at the start of a clause, usually with a comma: « Primero fuimos al cine, luego cenamos y al final volvimos a casa. » To mark a sudden turn, « de repente » or « de pronto » introduces the surprising event in the pretérito indefinido — « De repente, sonó el teléfono. » « Entonces » links cause to consequence: « No había entradas, entonces decidimos cenar fuera. »

Write it yourself

Write a short anecdote (5–6 sentences) about something unexpected that happened to you, using primero, luego, de repente and al final.

Tip for this task
« ¡Bien! » Your sequencing reads clearly. Remember that the surprising twist usually goes in the indefinido after « de repente ». Example: « Caminaba por la calle cuando, de repente, vi a mi profesor de la infancia. »
