Grammar in focus · the neuter 'lo que'

« Lo que » means 'what / the thing that' and refers to an idea, not a specific noun — « No entiendo lo que dices » (I don't understand what you say). It's great for highlighting in opinions: « Lo que más me preocupa es la privacidad », « Lo bueno es que es gratis. » Note « lo + adjective » turns an adjective into an abstract noun: « lo importante » (the important thing), « lo difícil » (the hard part). This makes B1 opinions sound more sophisticated.

Write it yourself

Write 4–5 sentences giving a balanced opinion on social media or technology, using lo que and one advantage and one drawback.

Tip for this task
« ¡Bien! » Your use of « lo que » sharpens your opinion. Pair it with a clear advantage and drawback for balance. Example: « Lo bueno es la comunicación; lo malo es la falta de privacidad. »
