Grammar in focus · relatives « lo cual », « el cual », « lo que »

B2 register favours precise relatives. « Lo cual » refers back to a whole previous clause: « Trabaja desde casa, lo cual le ahorra tiempo ». « El cual / la cual / los cuales / las cuales » are formal relatives, especially after prepositions or for clarity: « las empresas, las cuales invierten… ». « Lo que » introduces a noun-like clause ('what'): « Lo que necesitamos es flexibilidad ». Note: « lo cual » needs a preceding clause as antecedent; « lo que » can stand at the start of a sentence.

« ¡Bien! » Use « lo cual » only to refer to a whole idea: « Subieron los sueldos, lo cual motivó al equipo ». After a preposition prefer « el cual »: « el proyecto en el cual trabajo ».
