About Vidaara

Education is a right, not a privilege.

Vidaara is a nonprofit with a single mission: give anyone, anywhere, a free and world-class education — built by someone who knows first-hand what it costs to be denied one.

The story behind Vidaara

Most education platforms start with a market. Vidaara started with a wound that never quite healed.

I was a first-generation learner from a modest home in Delhi — the first in my family to dream this big. I had the marks to become an engineer, but not the map: that path ran through expensive coaching, fees and mentors that were simply out of reach. In the mid-1990s, with no internet and no one to point the way, the door quietly closed — a hard, early lesson that talent without opportunity goes nowhere.

I could have let that define me. Instead, in 2012 I left my job and founded the Udgam Welfare Foundation — not as charity, but as a refusal: no child with ability should lose their future for lack of money or guidance, the way I did.

Over the years I have personally helped more than 25 students — from families earning under $100 a month — into engineering careers that now pay them over $3,500 a month. Many lived in my own home, where food, books, a metro pass and a quiet place to study were never their problem to solve. I never saw it as charity. I saw it as an investment in their future.

From one room to a global classroom

For years the work was face-to-face — a classroom, a handful of students, two years of free JEE coaching at a time. Then COVID hit, attendance collapsed, and I realised a single room would always have a ceiling. So I taught myself artificial intelligence and rebuilt the mission online.

First came MathStudy.in — thirteen years of LaTeX-built mathematics material, turned into free, structured e-books. Then came Vidaara: a full K1–Grade 12 platform covering school subjects and India's major entrance exams, designed so that a first-grader sounding out words and a teenager revising for JEE can both learn here, for free, in one place.

The same lessons now reach students I will never meet — including 40+ hearing-impaired children I support with bilingual Maths and English content, in partnership with The Lepra India Trust. Accessibility isn't a feature we added; it's the whole point.

Self-taught, built with AI as a co-pilot

I'm not a trained software engineer. Everything behind Vidaara, I taught myself — one skill at a time. It began with Linux and LaTeX — the language I used to typeset thirteen years of mathematics. Then web development — HTML, CSS, WordPress and SEO. Then data, with certifications in Google Data Analytics and Data Science (Johns Hopkins University) and a working knowledge of R. When COVID forced everything online, I taught myself artificial intelligence and prompt engineering — and that changed what one person could build.

Vidaara isn't a bought template or an off-the-shelf product — I designed and built it in-house, with AI as a development partner. The major technologies behind the platform:

  • Node.js
  • Express.js
  • Laravel (REST API)
  • MySQL
  • Linux / Ubuntu (server)
  • EJS templating
  • KaTeX (math rendering)
  • HTML5 & CSS3
  • AI & Prompt Engineering

What we believe

A few convictions shape every decision we make:

  • Free should mean free. Not a trial. Not a freemium tease. Genuinely, permanently free.
  • Mastery beats speed. Learners move when they understand, not when a calendar says so. Our practice and progress tools are built around that.
  • No learner is an edge case. Content is designed for first-generation students, for different languages, and for children with hearing impairments — because the learners who need it most are the reason we exist.
  • Trust is earned through privacy. We collect the minimum we need, protect it seriously, and never show ads to children.

A nonprofit, by design

Vidaara is operated by the Udgam Welfare Foundation, a registered non-profit since 2012. Being a nonprofit isn't a tax label for us — it's the business model. Because we don't answer to shareholders or advertisers, we never have to make the platform worse for learners to make it better for revenue. Donations, grants and partnerships fund the work, and every rupee goes toward keeping learning free and making it better.

We will never sell your data, never show ads to children, and never put a paywall between a learner and a lesson. This is written into how we are funded, not just how we behave.
