How the IELTS band scale works

IELTS reports a band from 0 to 9 for each skill and an overall average, rounded to the nearest half band. Here is roughly what each band signals:

Band 9Expert — fully operational command
Band 8Very good — occasional slips only
Band 7Good — handles complexity well
Band 6Competent — generally effective
Band 5Modest — partial command
Band 4Limited — basic competence

Built to a gold standard — for Academic and General Training

Each lesson carries strategy that actually works under time pressure, worked examples, band-descriptor guidance and — for Writing — full model answers plus an instant, criteria-based band estimator so you can practise and self-assess.
