Section B — Short Answer (2 marks)
  1. Carbon has 4 valence electrons; gaining or losing 4 electrons to form an ion needs too much energy, so carbon shares its electrons, forming covalent bonds.

  3. Esterification is the reaction of a carboxylic acid with an alcohol (conc. H2SO4 catalyst) to form a sweet-smelling ester and water: CH3COOH + C2H5OH -> CH3COOC2H5 + H2O.

Addition: hydrogen adds across a double bond over a Ni catalyst, e.g. C2H4 + H2 -> C2H6 (hydrogenation). Substitution: an atom replaces a hydrogen, e.g. CH4 + Cl2 -> CH3Cl + HCl in sunlight.
  2. Ethanoic acid (CH3COOH) is a weak acid (the acid of vinegar; pure form is glacial acetic acid). With a base: CH3COOH + NaOH -> CH3COONa + H2O (neutralisation). With a carbonate: 2CH3COOH + Na2CO3 -> 2CH3COONa + H2O + CO2 (brisk effervescence of CO2). Esterification with ethanol: CH3COOH + C2H5OH -> CH3COOC2H5 + H2O (conc. H2SO4 catalyst), giving a sweet-smelling ester used in perfumes and flavours.
