A document is more fun and clearer with lists, pictures and shapes. In this chapter you'll organise ideas into lists and decorate your page with images and drawings in MS Word.
🔵Numbered & bulleted lists
A list breaks ideas into neat points instead of one long paragraph. Word has two kinds:
| List | Looks like | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Numbered | 1, 2, 3 … | Steps in an order (a recipe) |
| Bulleted | • • • dots | Points with no order (a shopping list) |
🤖 Vidi's Key Points
- A list breaks ideas into clear points instead of a long paragraph.
- A numbered list (1, 2, 3) is for steps in order; a bulleted list (dots) is for points in any order.
- Choose numbered when the order matters, bulleted when it doesn't.
⚡Quick Challenge: Which list is best for steps that must happen in ORDER?
🟢Adding pictures & ClipArt
Pictures make a page lively. In Word you can add:
- Pictures — image files from your computer (a photo you saved).
- ClipArt / Online pictures — ready-made drawings you pick from a gallery.
Use Insert → Pictures (or Online Pictures) and choose your image. After it appears you can:
- Resize it — drag a corner handle to make it bigger or smaller.
- Move it — drag it to the right spot on the page.
🤖 Vidi's Key Points
- Insert → Pictures adds an image from your computer; ClipArt/Online Pictures are ready-made drawings.
- After inserting, you can resize (drag a corner handle) and move (drag) the picture.
- Resize from the corners to keep the picture's shape (so it isn't squashed).

🟣Drawing & formatting shapes
The Shapes tool (Insert → Shapes) lets you draw arrows, boxes, circles, stars and more. Click a shape, then drag on the page to draw it.
Formatting a shape
| Setting | Changes |
|---|---|
| Fill | The colour or pattern inside the shape |
| Border (outline) | The line around the shape — its colour and thickness |
| Shadow | A soft shadow that makes the shape 'pop out' |
Text inside a shape
You can put words inside a shape — right-click it and choose Add Text, then type. This is how you make a labelled box, a sign or a speech bubble.
🤖 Vidi's Key Points
- Insert → Shapes lets you draw arrows, boxes, circles and stars by dragging.
- Format a shape with Fill (inside colour), Border/outline (line colour & thickness) and Shadow.
- Right-click a shape and choose 'Add Text' to type a label inside it.
⚡Quick Challenge: To keep a picture's shape while resizing, drag a … handle.
🛠️Practical: a 'My Day' poster
In Word, make a one-page poster about your day that:
- Lists your morning routine as a numbered list and your hobbies as a bulleted list.
- Has one picture (resized neatly from a corner).
- Has a coloured shape (with a fill and a thick border) used as a heading box.
- Has a label typed inside the shape.
