🔵Comparing Objects and Finding Similarities & Differences

What is Comparing?

Comparing means looking at two or more things to see how they are the same or different. We compare by size, shape, colour, weight, length, and other properties.

Ways to Compare Objects:

PropertyHow to CompareWords We Use
**Size**Which is bigger or smaller?big, small, bigger, smaller
**Length**Which is longer or shorter?long, short, longer, shorter
**Height**Which is taller or shorter?tall, short, taller, shorter
**Weight**Which is heavier or lighter?heavy, light, heavier, lighter
**Colour**Are they the same colour?same, different
**Shape**Are they the same shape?same, different

What are Similarities?

Similarities are ways that objects are the same. For example, a red apple and a red ball are similar because they are both red.

What are Differences?

Differences are ways that objects are different. For example, an apple and a ball are different because one is fruit, one is a toy.

Questions to Ask When Comparing:

  • What is the same about these objects?
  • What is different about these objects?
  • Which one is bigger/smaller/longer/shorter?
  • How are they alike?
Mathematical Reasoning Sort these into groups! Circles (round) Squares/Rectangles Triangles Reasoning: look for what is the same — sort by shape, colour, or size!
👀 See a worked example

Compare a cat and a dog. Name one similarity and one difference.

  • Similarity: Both are pets, both have 4 legs, both have fur
  • Difference: Cats meow, dogs bark; cats have whiskers, etc.

-

Answer: Similarity: Both are pets; Difference: Cats meow, dogs bark **Example 2:** Which is heavier: a feather or a rock? *Solution:* - A feather is very light - A rock is much heavier - **Answer:** Rock is heavier **Example 3:** A red crayon and a blue crayon. How are they the same? How are they different? *Solution:* - Same: Both are crayons, same shape, same size (if same brand) - Different: Different colours (red vs blue) - **Answer:** Same: both crayons; Different: different colours

🤖 Vidi's Key Points

  • Comparing means looking at how things are alike or different
  • Similarities are things that are the SAME
  • Differences are things that are DIFFERENT
  • Compare by: size, length, height, weight, colour, shape
  • Always look for both similarities AND differences

🟢Sorting, Grouping, and Sequencing Activities

What is Sorting?

Sorting means putting objects into groups based on a rule. For example, putting all red blocks together and all blue blocks together.

What is Grouping?

Grouping is similar to sorting. We put things that are alike into the same group.

Rules for Sorting and Grouping:

RuleGroup AGroup B
By colourAll red thingsAll blue things
By shapeAll circlesAll squares
By sizeBig thingsSmall things
By useToysBooks
By typeFruitsVegetables

What is Sequencing?

Sequencing means putting things in a specific order. For example, putting numbers in order from smallest to largest.

Types of Sequences:

TypeExamplePattern
Size orderSmall → Medium → LargeGetting bigger
Time orderMorning → Afternoon → EveningTime of day
Number order1, 2, 3, 4, 5Counting up
Alphabet orderA, B, C, DLetters
Event orderFirst → Next → LastStory order

Sort these items into two groups: Apple, Carrot, Banana, Broccoli

  • Group 1 (Fruits): Apple, Banana
  • Group 2 (Vegetables): Carrot, Broccoli

-

Answer: Fruits: Apple, Banana; Vegetables: Carrot, Broccoli **Example 2:** What comes next in this sequence? 5, 10, 15, ___ *Solution:* - Pattern: Add 5 each time - 15 + 5 = 20 - **Answer:** 20 **Example 3:** Arrange these in order from shortest to tallest: Giraffe, Mouse, Dog, Cat *Solution:* - Shortest: Mouse - Next: Cat - Next: Dog - Tallest: Giraffe - **Answer:** Mouse, Cat, Dog, Giraffe

🤖 Vidi's Key Points

  • Sorting = putting things into groups by a rule
  • Grouping = things that belong together
  • Sequencing = putting things in order
  • Common sequences: size, time, numbers, alphabet
  • Look for the pattern to find what comes next

🟣Puzzle Solving and Logical Thinking Games

What is a Puzzle?

A puzzle is a problem that makes you think. You use clues and logic to find the answer. Puzzles are fun and help your brain grow!

What is Logical Thinking?

Logical thinking means using facts and clues to figure something out. You put the pieces of information together to find the answer.

Types of Logic Puzzles:

TypeWhat You DoExample
**What comes next?**Find the pattern🔴🔵🔴🔵___ (next is 🔴)
**Odd one out**Find the different one🍎🍌🍊🥕 (🥕 is different)
**Matching**Pair things that go togetherSock → Shoe
**Riddles**Solve using clues"I have 4 legs and say meow" → Cat
**Order puzzles**Put in correct orderFirst, next, last

Tips for Solving Puzzles:

1. Read all the clues carefully

2. Look for patterns

3. Think about what you already know

4. Try one idea, then another

5. Don't give up - practice makes better!

Logical Thinking Games to Play:

  • Pattern matching games
  • Memory matching cards
  • "What doesn't belong?" games
  • Simple Sudoku (with shapes/colours)
  • Following directions games

What comes next? ★ ☆ ★ ☆ ★ ___

  • Pattern: Star, Star with tail, Star, Star with tail...
  • The pattern repeats every 2: ★ then ☆
  • After ★ comes ☆

-

Answer: ☆ **Example 2:** Find the odd one out: Triangle, Square, Circle, Book *Solution:* - Triangle, Square, Circle are all shapes - Book is not a shape (it is an object) - **Answer:** Book **Example 3:** Solve the riddle: "I have pages but I am not a tree. You read me. What am I?" *Solution:* - Has pages ✓ - Not a tree ✓ - You read it ✓ - **Answer:** A book

🤖 Vidi's Key Points

  • Puzzles make you think and solve problems
  • Logical thinking uses clues to find answers
  • Look for patterns in "what comes next" puzzles
  • Find the odd one out by spotting differences
  • Riddles give clues to guess the answer
  • Practice puzzles to get better at logical thinking
