What is Number Recognition?

Number recognition means being able to see a number and know what it is. You can read it, write it, and say its name.

Reading Numbers:

When we read a number, we look at the digits and say the number out loud. For example: "7" is read as "seven".

Writing Numbers:

When we write a number, we draw the digits correctly. For example: to write the number five, we write the digit "5".

What is Matching Numbers with Objects?

Matching means counting objects and finding the number that tells "how many". When you see 5 apples, the matching number is 5.

How to Count Objects:

1. Point to each object one by one

2. Say the number out loud as you point

3. The last number you say tells how many objects there are

What is Sequencing Numbers?

Sequencing means putting numbers in the correct order from smallest to largest (ascending) or largest to smallest (descending).

Ascending order (going up): 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, ...

Descending order (going down): 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, ...

What are Missing Numbers?

Sometimes a number is missing from a sequence. We need to find what number should be there by looking at the pattern.

Number Patterns:

  • Counting by 1s: 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, ...
  • Counting by 2s: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, ...
  • Counting by 5s: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, ...
  • Counting by 10s: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, ...

Before, After, and Between Numbers

What are Before, After, and Between Numbers?

These words tell us about the position of a number compared to other numbers on the number line.

Before:

The number that comes just before a given number (one less).

Example: The number before 8 is 7.

After:

The number that comes just after a given number (one more).

Example: The number after 8 is 9.

Between:

The number that lies between two given numbers.

Example: The number between 8 and 10 is 9.

Tip: To find the number between two numbers, add them and divide by 2.

For example, between 10 and 12: (10 + 12) ÷ 2 = 22 ÷ 2 = 11
