🔵First to Tenth - Understanding Ordinal Numbers
What are Ordinal Numbers?
Ordinal numbers tell us the position or order of something in a line or list. They answer the question "Which place?" not "How many?"
Cardinal Numbers vs. Ordinal Numbers:
| Cardinal Number (How many?) | Ordinal Number (Which position?) |
|---|---|
| 1 (one) | 1st (first) |
| 2 (two) | 2nd (second) |
| 3 (three) | 3rd (third) |
| 4 (four) | 4th (fourth) |
| 5 (five) | 5th (fifth) |
| 6 (six) | 6th (sixth) |
| 7 (seven) | 7th (seventh) |
| 8 (eight) | 8th (eighth) |
| 9 (nine) | 9th (ninth) |
| 10 (ten) | 10th (tenth) |
How to Write Ordinal Numbers:
- Most ordinal numbers add "th" to the end (fourth, sixth, seventh, tenth)
- Special ones: first, second, third (they don't follow the rule!)
- For numbers ending in 1, 2, 3 (except 11, 12, 13): use st, nd, rd
- 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, ... 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th...
Remember the Special Ones:
- 1 → first (not oneth!)
- 2 → second (not twoth!)
- 3 → third (not threeth!)
- 5 → fifth (not fiveth - the 'v' changes to 'f')
- 8 → eighth (only one 't')
- 9 → ninth (drop the 'e')
- 12 → twelfth (the 'v' changes to 'f')

🤖 Vidi's Key Points
- Ordinal numbers tell position, not quantity
- 1st = first, 2nd = second, 3rd = third (special words)
- 4th to 10th add "th": fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth
- Use ordinal numbers for: race positions, birthdays, floor numbers, dates
- Ordinal numbers answer "Which one in order?"
🟢Position Concepts - Using Ordinal Numbers
What are Position Concepts?
Position concepts help us describe where something is located using words like first, last, between, before, and after.
Key Position Words:
| Word | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| **First** | The one at the beginning | The first student in line |
| **Last** | The one at the end | The last cookie in the jar |
| **Between** | In the middle of two others | The sandwich between the two books |
| **Before** | Earlier in order | The number before 5 is 4 |
| **After** | Later in order | The number after 5 is 6 |
Finding Position in a Line:
- Left to right: 1st is on the far left, last is on the far right
- Right to left: 1st is on the far right, last is on the far left
- Front to back: 1st is at the front, last is at the back
Using Ordinal Numbers in Sentences:
- "I live on the 3rd floor."
- "Today is my 5th birthday."
- "December is the 12th month of the year."
- "She came 2nd in the spelling bee."

Answer: Grape **Example 2:** In a line of 10 children, Riya is 3rd from the front. What is her position from the back? *Solution:* - Total children = 10 - Position from front = 3rd - Position from back = 10 - 3 + 1 = 8th - Check: 1st, 2nd, 3rd (Riya), 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th - From back: 10th, 9th, 8th (Riya), 7th, 6th, 5th, 4th, 3rd, 2nd, 1st ✓ - **Answer:** 8th **Example 3:** Tom is 4th in line. Sam is 3 places behind Tom. What position is Sam in? *Solution:* - Tom is 4th - 3 places behind means: 4 + 3 = 7 - Sam is 7th in line - **Answer:** 7th
🤖 Vidi's Key Points
- First = at the beginning, Last = at the end
- Between means in the middle of two things
- Before comes earlier, After comes later
- To find position from the back: (total + 1) - position from front
- Ordinal numbers help describe order in daily life
