🔵Data Handling
Data is a collection of facts, numbers, or information that we gather to answer questions about the world around us. Data handling is the process of collecting this information, sorting it so it makes sense, and studying it to discover interesting stories or facts!
- Gathering Data: We collect information using three main detective methods:
- Polling: Asking people a direct question (e.g., "What is your favorite fruit?").
- Observation: Watching things happen and recording what you see (e.g., counting the colors of cars passing the school gate).
- Tallies: Making quick marks on paper while you count so you don't lose track.
- Classifying into Multiple Categories Simultaneously: Sorting items by more than one feature at the same time. For example, instead of just sorting blocks by color, you sort them by color AND shape (e.g., "Red Squares" vs. "Blue Triangles").
- Advanced Picture Graphs (Pictographs) with Multi-Unit Keys: A pictograph uses small pictures or icons to show data numbers. In Grade 2, we introduce a Key. The key is a master rule that tells you how much a single icon is worth. A key can represent more than one item! If the key states
1 🍎 = 2 apples, then seeing 3 apple pictures means you have 2 + 2 + 2 = 6 apples. - Organizing Frequency Tables with 4-and-Diagonal Tallies: A frequency table shows how often something occurs by listing categories, tally marks, and total numbers. To keep tracking clean, we use the 5-pack tally system:
- Draw straight vertical lines for the first four items:

- Introduction to Horizontal and Vertical Bar Graphs: Bar graphs use solid rectangular bars to represent numerical values.
- Vertical Bar Graphs: The bars stand straight up like towers. The taller the bar, the larger the number value.
- Horizontal Bar Graphs: The bars lie flat sideways like tracks. The longer the bar, the larger the number value.
- Extracting Information ("How Many More / Less"): Reading a graph or table to compare categories. To find a differential, identify the values of the two groups and subtract the smaller number from the larger number (\text{Differential} = \text{Larger Value} - \text{Smaller Value}).

A teacher draws a class reading chart pictograph. The row for "Science Books" contains 4 identical book pictures. At the bottom, the master key states: 1 📖 = 5 books. How many total science books did the class read?
- Count the number of book pictures shown in the row: There are 4 pictures.
- Read the master key assignment value: Each picture equals 5 books.
- Use skip counting by 5\text{s} or multiplication to calculate the total value:
- Skip count four times: 5, 10, 15, 20.

- We gather data using polling (asking questions), observation (watching), or tracking counts with tallies.
- The diagonal line in a tally mark bundle always represents the 5^{\text{th}} item, locking it into a clear pack of 5.
- Always read the Master Key at the bottom of a pictograph first, because a single picture can represent more than one item (2, 5, \text{or } 10).
- Bar graphs can stand up vertically or lie sideways horizontally; read them by looking at the line where the bar ends.
- To solve "how many more" or "how many less" questions, extract the two values and subtract the smaller number from the larger one.
