🔵Measurement - Time

Time helps us organize our lives! We use calendars to track large blocks of time like days, weeks, and months, and we use clocks to measure smaller intervals of time like hours and minutes.

  • Sequence of Months, Seasons, and Days: There are exactly 7 days in a week: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday*.
  • There are exactly 12 months in a year: January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, and December.
  • These months cycle through different seasons (like Summer, Monsoon, Autumn, and Winter) depending on where you live in the world.
  • Reading a Calendar Sheet: A calendar grid shows a specific month. It allows you to find a complete date setup by aligning the date number horizontally with the day of the week column directly above it.
  • Relative Tracking Vocabulary:
  • Today: The present day you are experiencing right now.
  • Yesterday: The day directly before today (-1 day).
  • Tomorrow: The day directly after today (+1 day).
  • Last Week / Next Week: Shifting time blocks by a full 7-day cycle backward or forward.
  • Anatomy of an Analog Clock Face: An analog clock face is a circular number line numbered from 1 to 12. It tracks time using two rotating hands:
  • Hour Hand: The short, thick hand. It points directly to the hours. It takes a full 12 hours to complete one circular loop.
  • Minute Hand: The long, thin hand. It tracks the minutes. It takes exactly 60 minutes (1 hour) to complete one loop.
  • Face Intervals: Each jump from one large number to the next on the clock face represents exactly 5 minutes.
  • Telling Time Frameworks:
  • O'clock (To the Hour): When the long minute hand points straight up at the 12, it is a brand-new hour. If the short hand points at 3, it is exactly 3:00 or 3 o'clock.
  • Half Past (Half-Hour): When the minute hand loops halfway around the clock and points straight down at the 6, 30 minutes have passed. If the hour hand is halfway between 3 and 4, it is 3:30 or half past 3.
  • Quarter Past:

    👀 See a worked example

An analog clock has its short hour hand positioned exactly halfway between the numbers 8 and 9. Its long minute hand points straight down at the number 6. Write this time in standard digital format and in words.

    1. Look at the short hour hand: It has passed the 8 but has not reached the 9 yet. This means the current hour is 8.
    2. Look at the long minute hand: It points at 6. Skip count by 5\text{s} six times from the top of the clock face:
    3. Combine the hour and minutes into digital format: 8:30.
    4. Convert this to standard time words: A minute hand pointing at the 6 means it is exactly half-hour past the hour, written as "Half past eight".
    Answer: 8:30 (Half past eight)

    🤖 Vidi's Key Points

    • A clock has two main tracking hands: the short hand shows hours and the long hand shows minutes.
    • Each number on the clock face represents a 5-minute jump for the minute hand.
    • Quarter past means :15 (minute hand at 3), and quarter to means :45 (minute hand at 9).
    • Use A.M. for the morning hours, and switch to P.M. for afternoon, evening, and night hours.
    • Yesterday means 1 day back, and tomorrow means 1 day forward from today.
