🔵Measure Area by Counting Unit Squares

Area is the amount of flat surface inside a shape, measured in square units (e.g., cm², m²).

To find area:

  • Count the unit squares that fit inside the shape
  • For rectangles: Area = Length x Width

👀 See a worked example
Rectangle 4 cm x 3 cm. Find the area. Area = 4 x 3 = 12 cm². Count: 4 columns x 3 rows = 12 unit squares.
Square with side 5 cm. Find the area. Area = 5 x 5 = 25 cm². 5 rows of 5 squares.
An irregular shape made of 8 full squares and 2 half-squares. Find the area. Area = 8 + (2 x 0.5) = 8 + 1 = 9 cm².

🟢Compare Area of Two Shapes

To compare areas:

  1. Calculate each shape's area using Length x Width (or count squares)
  2. Compare the numbers
  3. Larger area = more space inside

Two shapes with the same area can look very different!

Which has larger area: a 3x5 rectangle or a 4x4 square? Rectangle: 3x5=15 cm². Square: 4x4=16 cm². 16 > 15, so the square has larger area.
Compare shapes: one 2x6 (12 cm²), another 3x5 (15 cm²). 3x5=15 cm² > 2x6=12 cm². The 3x5 shape has larger area.
Two shapes both have area 24 cm². Can they look different? Yes! A 4x6 rectangle and a 3x8 rectangle both have area 24 cm² but look completely different.
