🔵Multiplication Fluency (1x1 to 10x10)

Multiplication is repeated addition. Knowing your times tables up to 10x10 is essential for all higher maths.

Key facts to memorize:

  • Any number x 1 = itself (7x1=7)
  • Any number x 10 = add a 0 (6x10=60)
  • 9x rule: digits of product sum to 9 (9x3=27, 2+7=9)
  • 5x rule: ends in 0 or 5 (5x7=35)

7 x 8 = ? 56. 7x8 is one of the trickier facts. Remember: 56 = 7x8 (5,6,7,8 — the digits go in order!).
9 x 6 = ? 54. Use the 9s trick: 9x6=54, and 5+4=9. Always works for 9 times table.
4 x 9 = ? 36. 4x9 = 36. Check: 3+6=9. Correct!

  • 9x trick: digits of product always sum to 9.
  • 5x: always ends in 0 or 5.

🟢Commutative Property of Multiplication

The commutative property means: order does not matter in multiplication.

a x b = b x a

This is useful because you only need to learn half the times table — if you know 7x8=56, you also know 8x7=56.

5 x 6 = 30. What is 6 x 5? 6 x 5 = 30. Commutative property: switching the order gives the same answer.
Write another fact related to 8 x 3 = 24. 3 x 8 = 24. Flip the two numbers — the product stays the same.
Is 9 x 7 = 7 x 9? Yes. Both equal 63. Commutative property always works for multiplication.

  • Knowing 7x8=56 means you also know 8x7=56 for free.
  • This halves the number of multiplication facts you need to memorize.

🟣Missing Factor Problems

When you know the product (answer) and one factor, you can find the missing factor using division or the times table.

Example: ___ x 6 = 24. Think: what times 6 equals 24? 4 x 6 = 24, so the answer is 4.

9 x ___ = 54 54 / 9 = 6. Or count by 9s until you reach 54: 9,18,27,36,45,54 — that is 6 steps. Answer: 6.
___ x 8 = 72 72 / 8 = 9. Check: 9 x 8 = 72. Answer: 9.
