🔵Thousands, Hundreds, Tens, Ones
In a 4-digit number we have four place values:
- Thousands = groups of 1,000
- Hundreds = groups of 100
- Tens = groups of 10
- Ones = leftover units
Example: 3,527 = 3 thousands + 5 hundreds + 2 tens + 7 ones

How many thousands are in 8,492?
The digit in the thousands place is 8. So there are 8 thousands = 8,000.
Write the number: 4 thousands + 0 hundreds + 3 tens + 9 ones.
4,039. Zero in hundreds place gives us the 0 in the middle.
What is the value of the digit 6 in 9,678?
6 is in the hundreds place. Value = 6 x 100 = 600.

🟢Rounding to Nearest 10, 100, 1000
Rounding rules:
- Identify the place you are rounding to
- Look at the digit one place to the right
- If it is 0-4, round down (keep the digit, change rest to 0)
- If it is 5-9, round up (increase the digit by 1, change rest to 0)

Round 4,783 to the nearest 10.
Look at ones digit: 3. Since 3 < 5, round down. Answer: 4,780.
Round 5,256 to the nearest 100.
Look at tens digit: 5. Since 5 >= 5, round up. Answer: 5,300.
Round 2,789 to the nearest 1,000.
Look at hundreds digit: 7. Since 7 >= 5, round up. Answer: 3,000.

🟣Comparing and Ordering 4-Digit Numbers
Compare 4-digit numbers starting from the leftmost digit:
- Compare thousands first
- If equal, compare hundreds
- If equal, compare tens
- If equal, compare ones
Use symbols: < (less than), > (greater than), = (equal to)

Thousands: both 5. Hundreds: both 4. Tens: both 2. Ones: 2 vs 9. Since 2 < 9, answer: 5,432 < 5,429. Wait — tens: 3 vs 2, so 5,432 > 5,429.
Arrange from smallest to largest: 6,789 ; 6,798 ; 6,799
All have same thousands (6) and hundreds (7). Compare tens: 8, 9, 9. For the two 9s, compare ones: 8 vs 9. Order: 6,789 < 6,798 < 6,799.
Which is greater: 9,999 or 9,001?
Same thousands (9). Hundreds: 9 vs 0. Since 9 > 0, answer: 9,999 > 9,001.
