🔵Polygons — Sides & Corners

A polygon is a closed shape made of straight sides. We name polygons by their number of sides:

Triangle3 sides
Quadrilateral4 sides (square, rectangle…)
Pentagon5 sides
Hexagon6 sides

A polygon has the same number of corners (vertices) as sides.

How many sides does a pentagon have?

5 sides.

What do we call any 4-sided polygon?

A quadrilateral (square, rectangle, rhombus, etc.).

🤖 Vidi's Key Points

  • A polygon is a closed shape with straight sides.
  • Triangle 3, quadrilateral 4, pentagon 5, hexagon 6 sides.
  • A polygon has as many corners (vertices) as sides.

🟢Lines of Symmetry

A shape has a line of symmetry if you can fold it so the two halves match exactly. Some shapes have more than one line of symmetry.

  • A square has 4 lines of symmetry.
  • A rectangle has 2.
  • A circle has endless lines of symmetry.
  • A scalene triangle has none.

👀 See a worked example

How many lines of symmetry does a square have?

4.

Does the letter A have a line of symmetry?

Yes — a vertical line down the middle. 1 line.

🤖 Vidi's Key Points

  • A line of symmetry folds a shape into two matching halves.
  • Square 4, rectangle 2, circle endless, scalene triangle 0.
  • Some shapes have more than one line of symmetry.
