🔵Types of Lines

In geometry, a line is a straight path. In Grade 4, we study three important relationships between lines:

  • Parallel Lines: Lines that never meet and are always the same distance apart. Like railway tracks or opposite edges of a ruler.
  • Perpendicular Lines: Lines that meet at exactly 90 degrees (a right angle). Like the corner of a room or the letter L.
  • Intersecting Lines: Lines that cross each other at any angle. Like scissors or roads crossing at a junction.

A line segment has two endpoints. A ray has one endpoint and goes on forever in one direction.

Identify the type of lines formed by the two vertical bars in the letter 'H'. The two vertical lines in 'H' are parallel — they run in the same direction, are always the same distance apart, and never meet.
Give two real-life examples each of parallel and perpendicular lines. Parallel: railway tracks, opposite edges of a notebook. Perpendicular: corner of a wall meets the floor at 90 degrees; the letter 'L' shows perpendicular lines.
A road runs north-south. Another road crosses it going east-west. What type of lines do they form? They form intersecting lines. If the crossing is at exactly 90 degrees, they are also perpendicular lines.

🟢Types of Angles

An angle is formed when two rays meet at a common point called the vertex. Angles are measured in degrees (°).

Three main types of angles:

  • Acute Angle: Less than 90 degrees (sharp, like the tip of a pencil)
  • Right Angle: Exactly 90 degrees (like the corner of a square)
  • Obtuse Angle: Between 90 and 180 degrees (wider than a right angle)

A straight angle = 180 degrees (a straight line).

Classify these angles: 45 degrees, 90 degrees, 135 degrees. 45 degrees: Acute (less than 90). 90 degrees: Right angle (exactly 90). 135 degrees: Obtuse (between 90 and 180).
A clock shows 3:00. What type of angle do the hands make? At 3:00, the minute hand points to 12 (top) and the hour hand points to 3 (right). The angle between them is exactly 90 degrees — a Right Angle.
If angle A = 35 degrees and angle B = 55 degrees share a common ray, what is the total angle formed? Total angle = 35 + 55 = 90 degrees. This is a Right Angle.

🟣Using a Protractor to Measure Angles

A protractor is the tool used to measure angles in degrees.

Steps to measure an angle with a protractor:

  • Place the centre hole of the protractor at the vertex of the angle
  • Align the baseline (0 line) with one ray of the angle
  • Read the degrees where the second ray crosses the scale
  • Use the scale that starts from 0 on the side where you placed the baseline

Protractors have two scales — always use the correct one!

Describe the steps to draw a 60 degree angle. Step 1: Draw a ray. Step 2: Place protractor centre at the endpoint (vertex). Step 3: Align baseline with the ray. Step 4: Mark a point at 60 degrees on the scale. Step 5: Connect the vertex to that point with another ray.
A shape has 4 sides. All angles are 90 degrees. Opposite sides are parallel and equal. What shape is it? A shape with 4 right angles, opposite sides parallel and equal is a Rectangle. If all four sides are also equal, it is a Square.
How many pairs of parallel lines does a rectangle have? A rectangle has 2 pairs of parallel lines: the top and bottom sides are parallel, and the left and right sides are parallel.
