🔵Fraction of a Quantity & × a Whole Number
Finding a fraction of an amount means multiply. To find 1/3 of 9, divide 9 by 3 → 3.
To multiply a fraction by a whole number, multiply the numerator by the whole number: 1/2 × 4 = 4/2 = 2.

Find 1/2 of 10.
10 ÷ 2 = 5.
Multiply 2/3 × 6.
2 × 6 = 12, ÷ 3 = 4.
🤖 Vidi's Key Points
- 'Fraction of' an amount means multiply.
- 1/3 of 9 = 9 ÷ 3 = 3.
- Fraction × whole: multiply the numerator by the whole number.
🟢Multiplying a Fraction by a Fraction
To multiply two fractions, multiply the numerators and multiply the denominators:
1/2 × 1/2 = (1×1)/(2×2) = 1/4. So half of a half is a quarter.
👀 See a worked example
Multiply 1/2 × 1/3.
(1×1)/(2×3) = 1/6.
Multiply 2/3 × 3/4.
(2×3)/(3×4) = 6/12 = 1/2.
🤖 Vidi's Key Points
- Multiply numerators together, and denominators together.
- 1/2 × 1/2 = 1/4 (half of a half).
- Simplify the answer if you can.
