🌱What is a Plant?

💭
Vidi wonders: Look out of your window. How many green living things can you spot?

Plants are living things. Just like you, they are born, they grow bigger, and they need food and water to stay alive.

Plants are everywhere! You can find them in:

  • 🏡 Gardens and pots at home
  • 🌳 Parks and along the road
  • 🌾 Big farms and green forests

Some plants are tiny like grass. Some are huge like a mango tree. But every plant is alive!

🤔 Vidi's Wonder Questions

Is a plant alive like me?

Yes! A plant grows, drinks water and makes baby plants from seeds — so it is a living thing, just like you.

Can a plant walk around?

No. Plants stay in one place because their roots hold them in the soil. But they CAN slowly turn their leaves towards the sunlight!

🤖 Vidi's Key Points

  • A plant is a living thing — it grows and needs water.
  • Plants are found all around us — at home, in parks, on farms.
  • Plants can be very small (grass) or very big (a tree).

🐝Parts of a Plant

💭
Vidi wonders: A plant has special parts, and each part has its own job. Can you guess what the roots do?

Most plants have four main parts. Each one helps the plant in a special way:

  • 🌿 Roots — hold the plant in the soil and drink water.
  • 🌱 Stem — stands tall and carries water up to the leaves.
  • 🍃 Leaves — make food for the plant using sunlight.
  • 🌸 Flower — makes seeds so new plants can grow.

🤔 Vidi's Wonder Questions

Why can't I see the roots of a tree?

Roots usually grow under the ground, hidden in the soil. They spread out to hold the big tree steady and to drink lots of water.

Which part makes the plant's food?

The green leaves! They catch sunlight and use it to make food for the whole plant. Clever leaves!

🤖 Vidi's Key Points

  • Roots hold the plant and drink water.
  • Stem holds the plant up and carries water.
  • Leaves make food using sunlight.
  • Flower makes seeds for new plants.

☀️What Plants Need to Grow

💭
Vidi wonders: What do you think would happen to a little plant kept inside a dark cupboard for a week?

Plants are living, so they need a few things to grow healthy and strong:

  • ☀️ Sunlight — to make their food.
  • 💧 Water — to drink every day.
  • 🌬️ Air — plants breathe air too!
  • 🟫 Soil — to hold the roots and give them food bits.

If a plant does not get sunlight and water, it becomes weak, turns yellow, and may even die. That is why we water the plants in our home and keep them near a window.

🤔 Vidi's Wonder Questions

Do plants need food like we do?

Plants are special — they MAKE their own food in their leaves using sunlight, water and air. We cannot do that. That is their superpower!

Can a plant get too much water?

Yes! Too much water is not good either — the roots can rot. Plants like the right amount, not too little and not too much.

🤖 Vidi's Key Points

  • Plants need sunlight, water, air and soil.
  • Leaves use sunlight to make the plant's food.
  • Without sunlight and water, a plant turns weak and yellow.

💧Plants Give Us Food

💭
Vidi wonders: Look at your lunch plate. How much of it began as a plant?

Plants are very kind — they give us lots of food to eat!

  • 🍎 Fruits — apple, mango, banana
  • 🥕 Vegetables — carrot, potato, spinach
  • 🌾 Grains — rice, wheat (for roti and bread)
  • 🫘 Pulses — dal, beans, chana

We even eat different parts of plants! A carrot is a root, spinach is a leaf, and an apple grows from a flower.

🤔 Vidi's Wonder Questions

Is rice really from a plant?

Yes! Rice grows on a grass-like plant in flooded fields. Wheat for your roti and bread grows on a plant too.

Which part of the plant is a potato?

A potato grows under the ground — it is a special swollen stem that stores food for the plant. We get to eat that stored food!

🤖 Vidi's Key Points

  • Plants give us fruits, vegetables, grains and pulses.
  • We eat different parts: carrot = root, spinach = leaf.
  • Rice and wheat are foods that grow on plants.

🍃From Seed to Plant

💭
Vidi wonders: How does a tiny seed, smaller than your fingernail, become a tall plant?

Every big plant once started as a small seed. With soil, water and sunlight, the seed slowly wakes up and grows:

  • 🌰 First, a seed is planted in the soil.
  • 🌱 A tiny sprout pushes out, with roots going down.
  • 🪴 It grows into a young plant with leaves.
  • 🌷 At last it becomes a grown plant with flowers and new seeds.

Then the new seeds can grow into more plants. This happens again and again — it is the plant's life cycle!

🌰Seed🌱Sprout🪴Plant🌻FlowerFrom seed to plant

🤔 Vidi's Wonder Questions

How long does a seed take to sprout?

It depends on the plant! A bean seed can sprout in just 3 to 5 days, but a tree can take many weeks. Patience helps.

What wakes the seed up?

Water and warmth! When a seed gets water and a cosy warm spot, it wakes up and begins to grow its first little root.

🤖 Vidi's Key Points

  • Every plant starts as a tiny seed.
  • Order of growing: seed → sprout → young plant → grown plant.
  • A grown plant makes new seeds, and the cycle starts again.

🧪 Try it at Home!

Become a real scientist! Grow your very own bean plant and watch a seed wake up. 🌱

🧺 You will need

  • A glass jar or clear cup
  • Cotton wool (or tissue paper)
  • 1–2 dried beans (rajma or moong work great)
  • A little water

👣 Steps

  1. Fill the jar with cotton wool and dampen it with a little water (not too much!).
  2. Tuck the bean between the cotton and the side of the glass, so you can see it.
  3. Keep the jar near a window where it gets light.
  4. Add a few drops of water every day to keep the cotton damp.
  5. Watch each day and draw what you see!
👀 Watch for: In 3–5 days a tiny root pokes out, then a green shoot reaches up. You are watching a seed become a plant!
🛡️ Grown-up helper: Please help your child with the glass jar and remind them that these beans are for the experiment, not for eating raw.
