Living & Non-Living Things

Hi! I'm Vidi. Let's explore Living & Non-Living Things together — wonder, read, then play the games to win a ⭐!

🌱What Is Living?

💭
Vidi wonders: A dog runs and eats. A rock just sits still. What makes the dog alive and the rock not?

Living things are alive. We can tell because they do special things:

  • 🌱 They grow — they get bigger.
  • 🍎 They need food and water.
  • 🌬️ They breathe air.
  • 🐾 They can move on their own.
  • 🐣 They make young ones (babies or seeds).

People, animals and plants are all living things.

🤔 Vidi's Wonder Questions

Plants can't run, so how are they living?

Plants do not run, but they still grow, drink water, breathe and make seeds. Moving is only one sign of life — plants do all the others!

Is a seed living?

Yes! A seed is resting, but it is alive. Give it water and warmth and it will wake up and grow into a plant.

🤖 Vidi's Key Points

  • Living things grow, eat, breathe, move and make young ones.
  • People, animals and plants are living.
  • Doing these special things shows something is alive.

🐝Non-Living Things

💭
Vidi wonders: Your toy car has wheels, but it cannot drive away by itself. Why not?

Non-living things are not alive. They do not grow, eat, breathe or move on their own.

  • 🪨 A rock
  • 🪑 A chair
  • ⚽ A ball
  • 🚗 A toy car
  • 🥄 A spoon

A toy car can roll only when YOU push it. It cannot move by itself, so it is non-living.

🤔 Vidi's Wonder Questions

A river moves — is it living?

Good question! A river moves, but it does not eat, grow or breathe. The water is pushed downhill by gravity. So a river is non-living.

Why isn't a toy puppy alive?

A toy puppy may look cute, but it cannot eat, grow or breathe on its own. Only a real puppy does those living things.

🤖 Vidi's Key Points

  • Non-living things do not grow, eat, breathe or move on their own.
  • Rocks, chairs, balls and toys are non-living.
  • A toy car moves only when we push it.

☀️Living or Non-Living?

💭
Vidi wonders: How can you be sure if something is living or non-living? What would you check?

To decide, ask these questions about the thing:

  • Does it grow on its own? 🌱
  • Does it need food and water? 🍎
  • Does it breathe? 🌬️
  • Can it move by itself? 🐾

If the answer is yes, it is living. If the answer is no, it is non-living.

🤔 Vidi's Wonder Questions

Is the Sun living because it gives light?

No. The Sun is very important, but it does not grow, eat or breathe. It is a giant ball of hot gas — non-living.

Are clouds living?

Clouds move and change shape, but they do not eat, grow or breathe. They are made of tiny water drops — so they are non-living.

🤖 Vidi's Key Points

  • Ask: does it grow, eat, breathe and move on its own?
  • All 'yes' → living. 'No' → non-living.
  • The Sun and clouds are non-living.

💧What Living Things Need

💭
Vidi wonders: You, a sparrow and a mango tree all need the same few things to live. Can you guess them?

Every living thing — people, animals and plants — needs:

  • 🍎 Food — for energy to grow.
  • 💧 Water — to drink.
  • 🌬️ Air — to breathe.
  • 🏠 A place to live — space and shelter.

🤔 Vidi's Wonder Questions

Do plants eat food like we do?

Plants make their own food in their leaves using sunlight. We have to eat food, but plants are clever cooks who make theirs!

What happens if a living thing has no water?

Without water, living things become weak and unwell, and they cannot survive for long. That is why water is so precious.

🤖 Vidi's Key Points

  • All living things need food, water, air and space.
  • Plants make their own food using sunlight.
  • Water is needed by every living thing.

🍃Once-Living Things

💭
Vidi wonders: Your wooden chair is non-living now. But was it always non-living?

Some non-living things were once part of a living thing! They came from plants or animals.

  • 🪑 Wood comes from trees (which were living).
  • 📄 Paper is made from wood.
  • 🧶 Wool comes from sheep.
  • 🍯 Honey comes from bees.

So a wooden chair is non-living now, but the tree it came from was once alive.

🤔 Vidi's Wonder Questions

Is cotton cloth once-living?

Yes! Cotton grows on the cotton plant. People pick it and turn it into thread and cloth. So your cotton shirt came from a living plant.

Why should we not waste paper?

Paper is made from trees. Wasting paper means cutting more trees. Using paper carefully helps save living trees!

🤖 Vidi's Key Points

  • Some non-living things were once part of living things.
  • Wood and paper come from trees; wool from sheep; honey from bees.
  • Saving paper helps save living trees.

🧪 Try it at Home!

Go on a Living or Non-Living Hunt around your home or garden! 🔎

🧺 You will need

  • A notebook and pencil
  • Your sharp eyes!

👣 Steps

  1. Walk slowly around your home, balcony or garden.
  2. Find 3 LIVING things (like a plant, a pet, an insect).
  3. Find 3 NON-LIVING things (like a chair, a cup, a toy).
  4. For each living thing, say one reason you know it is alive.
  5. Make two lists: 'Living' and 'Non-Living'.
👀 Watch for: You will notice the living things grow, move or need care, while the non-living ones just stay the same. That is how scientists tell them apart!
🛡️ Grown-up helper: Look at insects and plants gently — do not pick or touch animals. Stay where a grown-up can see you.
