🌱Big and Small Plants
Plants come in many shapes and sizes. Some are tall, some are short, some are thin and bendy.
- 🌳 Very big plants like a mango or banyan tree.
- 🌿 Medium plants like a rose bush.
- 🌱 Small plants like grass, tulsi and mint.
Scientists sort plants into groups by their size and their stem.
🤔 Vidi's Wonder Questions
Why are some plants so tall?
Tall plants like trees have a strong, woody stem called a trunk. It holds them up high so their leaves can reach the sunlight.
Is grass really a plant?
Yes! Grass is a small, green plant. It grows, needs water and sunlight, and there are thousands of tiny grass plants in a lawn.
🤖 Vidi's Key Points
- Plants come in many sizes — big, medium and small.
- We sort plants by their size and their stem.
- Even tiny grass is a real plant.
🐝Trees, Shrubs and Herbs
We can sort many plants into three groups by their stem:
- 🌳 Trees — very tall, with one thick, hard, woody trunk (mango, neem, banyan).
- 🌿 Shrubs — medium, bushy, with many hard stems near the ground (rose, hibiscus).
- 🌱 Herbs — small and soft with a green, soft stem (tulsi, mint, coriander).
🤔 Vidi's Wonder Questions
How do I know if a plant is a herb?
A herb is small with a soft, green stem you can bend easily. Tulsi, mint and coriander in the kitchen are all herbs.
Are all big plants trees?
Big plants with one thick woody trunk are trees. But a bushy plant with many stems, even if quite big, is a shrub — like a rose bush.
🤖 Vidi's Key Points
- Trees → tall, one thick woody trunk.
- Shrubs → medium, bushy, many hard stems.
- Herbs → small, soft green stem (tulsi, mint).
☀️Climbers and Creepers
A few plants have very thin, weak stems, so they cannot stand straight. They grow in special ways:
- 🧗 Climbers — they climb UP a stick, wall or fence for support (money plant, grapevine, beans).
- 🍉 Creepers — they creep and spread ALONG the ground (pumpkin, watermelon, sweet potato).
🤔 Vidi's Wonder Questions
Why can't a creeper stand up tall?
Its stem is very thin and weak, so it cannot hold itself up. Instead it spreads flat along the ground, where it is safe.
How does a climber hold on?
Many climbers have tiny curly threads called tendrils that wrap around a stick or fence, just like little hands, and pull the plant up.
🤖 Vidi's Key Points
- Climbers and creepers have thin, weak stems.
- Climbers grow UP a support (money plant, beans).
- Creepers spread ALONG the ground (pumpkin, watermelon).
💧Plants Give Us So Much
Plants are kind helpers. They give us many things we use every day:
- 🍎 Food — fruits, vegetables, grains.
- 🌬️ Fresh air — plants make the oxygen we breathe.
- 🪵 Wood — for furniture and paper.
- 💊 Medicines — many come from plants like tulsi and neem.
- 🌳 Shade and shelter — and homes for birds.
🤔 Vidi's Wonder Questions
How do plants give us air to breathe?
When plants make their food, they let out a gas called oxygen — the very air we need to breathe. More plants means cleaner, fresher air!
Can plants really be medicine?
Yes! For a sore throat, people often use tulsi or honey. Many real medicines are made from plants. Plants help keep us healthy.
🤖 Vidi's Key Points
- Plants give us food, wood, medicine and shade.
- Plants make the oxygen we breathe.
- More plants means fresher, cleaner air.
🍃Caring for Plants
Because plants help us, we must look after them too:
- 💧 Water them, but not too much.
- ☀️ Keep them where they get sunlight.
- 🌱 Do not pluck leaves or flowers for fun.
- 🌳 Plant new trees and never harm them.
If everyone plants and cares for trees, our world stays green, cool and full of fresh air.
🤔 Vidi's Wonder Questions
Why should we plant more trees?
Trees give shade, clean the air, hold the soil and are homes for birds. Planting trees makes our Earth healthier for everyone.
Is it bad to pluck flowers?
Plucking flowers and leaves for fun hurts the plant and means fewer flowers for everyone. It is kinder to enjoy them on the plant.
🤖 Vidi's Key Points
- Water plants and give them sunlight.
- Do not pluck leaves or flowers for fun.
- Plant trees to keep the world green and healthy.
🧪 Try it at Home!
Become a Plant Detective and sort the plants you see around you! 🕵️
🧺 You will need
- A notebook and pencil
- A garden, park, balcony or street with plants
👣 Steps
- Look at 4 or 5 different plants near you.
- Gently feel each stem (with a grown-up): is it hard and woody, or soft and green?
- Decide: is it a TREE, a SHRUB or a HERB?
- Look for any CLIMBER going up a wall, or a CREEPER on the ground.
- Draw your favourite plant and write which group it belongs to.
