What is an orbit?

An orbit is the path an object takes around another in space. Each planet travels its own oval orbit around the Sun, again and again.

A spaceship and everything in it are falling around the Earth together, so things feel weightless and float. Far from Earth, gravity's pull is also much weaker.

Would I weigh the same on the Moon?

No! The Moon's gravity is much weaker than Earth's — about one-sixth. So on the Moon you would weigh much less and could jump super high!

  1. On a clear night, go outside with a grown-up, away from bright lights.
  2. Let your eyes adjust to the dark for a few minutes.
  3. Find the Moon — what shape (phase) is it tonight?
  4. Look for bright stars. Can you spot a group that makes a pattern (a constellation)?
  5. Draw the Moon and the brightest stars you see, and where they are.
👀 Watch for: You will notice some 'stars' shine steadily without twinkling — those are actually planets like Venus or Jupiter! The sky is full of wonders to map.
🛡️ Grown-up helper: Never look at the bright Sun, even with sunglasses — only stargaze at night. Stay with a grown-up and dress warmly.
