A bullet of mass 10 g moving at 400 m/s embeds in a stationary block of mass 390 g. Find the velocity of the combined system.

Conservation of momentum:

$$m_1 u_1 = (m_1 + m_2)v$$

$$0.01 \times 400 = (0.01 + 0.39) \times v$$

$$v = \frac{4}{0.4} = 10 m/s$$
