Addition polymerization: Monomers add together without loss of any byproduct. Requires C=C double bonds.

$$n\,CH_2=CH_2 \xrightarrow{catalyst} (-CH_2-CH_2-)_n$$

$$(Polyethylene)$$

Condensation polymerization: Monomers react with loss of small molecules (H₂O, HCl, etc.). Requires two different functional groups.

$$n\,HO-R-OH + n\,HOOC-R'-COOH \rightarrow (-O-R-OOC-R'-CO-)_n + n\,H_2O$$

$$e.g., Nylon-6,6 (from hexamethylenediamine + adipic acid)$$

Pro tip: memorise the standard result, it reappears in many problems.

How do we know the approximation is valid here?

I solved it a slightly different way and got the same answer, good sign.
