For a reaction 2A + B → Products, when [A] is doubled (B constant), rate doubles; when [B] is doubled (A constant), — JEE Chemistry
For a reaction $2A + B \rightarrow Products$, when $[A]$ is doubled (B constant), rate doubles; when $[B]$ is doubled (A constant), rate quadruples. Write the rate law and find the overall order.

- Rate $\propto [A]^1$ (doubling A doubles rate → first order in A)
- Rate $\propto [B]^2$ (doubling B quadruples rate → second order in B)
$$r = k[A][B]^2$$
Overall order $= 1 + 2 = 3$ (third order)

Why do we take the positive value only in the last step?

Thanks a ton, I was stuck on this exact problem for an hour.

Saved me before my mock test. Much clearer than my coaching notes.

Good follow-up questions — remember to always state your assumptions in the JEE subjective section.
