$$CH_3MgBr + HCHO \xrightarrow{1. dry ether} CH_3CH_2OMgBr$$
$$\xrightarrow{2. H_3O^+} CH_3CH_2OH$$
$$Product: Ethanol (primary alcohol)$$
General rule: Grignard + HCHO → 1° alcohol; + RCHO → 2° alcohol; + RCOR → 3° alcohol.
