Correct answer: (d) $\frac34$
$\operatorname{Im}(z^2+z+1)=y(2x+1)=0\Rightarrow x=-\frac12$ (as $y\ne0$); then $a=\frac34-y^2<\frac34$. So $a$ cannot equal $\frac34$.
