Let $z$ have non-zero imaginary part and $a=z^2+z+1$ be real. Then $a$ cannot take the value

(a) $-1$
(b) $\frac13$
(c) $\frac12$
(d) $\frac34$

Correct answer: (d) $\frac34$

$\operatorname{Im}(z^2+z+1)=y(2x+1)=0\Rightarrow x=-\frac12$ (as $y\ne0$); then $a=\frac34-y^2<\frac34$. So $a$ cannot equal $\frac34$.
