Two blocks of masses $m_1 = 3$ kg and $m_2 = 5$ kg are connected by a string over a frictionless pulley (Atwood machine). Find the acceleration of the system and tension in the string. (g = 10 m/s²)

$$a = \frac{(m_2 - m_1)g}{m_1 + m_2} = \frac{(5-3)\times10}{8} = \frac{20}{8} = 2.5 m/s^2$$

$$T = \frac{2m_1 m_2 g}{m_1 + m_2} = \frac{2 \times 3 \times 5 \times 10}{8} = 37.5 N$$

Why do we take the positive value only in the last step?

Saved me before my mock test. Much clearer than my coaching notes.
