Step 1 — Aldol addition:
$$2CH_3CHO \xrightarrow{NaOH(dil)} CH_3-CH(OH)-CH_2-CHO$$
$$(3-hydroxybutanal)$$
Step 2 — Dehydration (on heating):
$$CH_3-CH(OH)-CH_2-CHO \xrightarrow{\Delta} CH_3-CH=CH-CHO + H_2O$$
$$But-2-enal (crotonaldehyde)$$
