Scarcity, choice and opportunity cost

The core idea of economics is scarcity: our wants are unlimited but resources (money, time, materials) are limited. So we must make choices, and every choice has an opportunity cost — the next-best thing you gave up. Spend an hour gaming, and the opportunity cost is the homework you didn't do.
