River valley civilizations

The first great civilizations arose in fertile river valleys: Mesopotamia (Tigris & Euphrates), Egypt (Nile), the Indus Valley, and China (Yellow River). Rivers gave water, fertile soil and transport, enabling cities, writing, and organised government.
